Gave John's mother's name as Jane and not Elizabeth but most likely an error as James Sim Mutch would actually have been Elizabeth Simpson's great grandson.

       Valuation Rolls for Skogar Farm, Birsay, Orkney

       Valuation Rolls indicated that the owner of the lands of Skogar wasThe Reverend Doctor Samuel Traill.  Trails families very prominent in Orkney and Cathness. John Sim bought the lease, but not the land, from Traill, who according to an article by Orcadian writer Gregor Lamb about an apple tree at Skogar, had encouraged John Sim to come fromAberdeenshire.

       The general procedure in Scotland in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries was for the land holder or feu owner to lease land at the best price he could get and it at times it became like an auction.  Sometimes the owner lived on his land and Trail did live at times on part of his property.  He owned a number of farms around Skogar.  The Rolls show the Owner, the Lease Holder and the Occupier.  In John Sim's case he was Leasee and Occupier.

       As you will see from notes below John Sim lost the lease in 1873-74 to George Scarth.  It very much looks as though John could not pay as much as George Scarth.  John Sim moved back to Aberdeenshire after this and presumably took a lease there he could afford.

       John Sim was in Skogar from about 1853 as proved by the birth of his children - John Sim junior born Aberdeenshire 1852 and Thomas Rennie Sim born Orkney 1854.

       1873 - 1875     Lease held by George Scarth at £75 per annum and presumably too much for John Sim to pay.

       On the map of the area the farm adjacent to Skogar is Downatown. Strange goings on: Ann married Donald Stephen in January 1868 but appears to have had a child, James Sim (Mutch) in October 1868 and this child was registered in her maiden name and illegitimate. A court order declared the father to be George Mutch, a Master Blacksmith from Stromness. The declaration by the court was in December of 1868. Donald and Ann had a child in 1870 (Donald Gunn Stephen) that died in 1871 but later had more children. Donald and Ann were at their respective parents house at the 1871 census so this early relationship between the couple appears to have been somewhat erratic.
